Senior boys tennis players celebrate their last home match at senior night.

The news a sports team never wants to hear.   The news that a key player is injured.

“The diagnosis was that I broke my third disk in my back,” Ben Collins 20’ said.

After a tough loss from the roster, the team came together to push through a couple tough matches.  After the devastating news of the the number two singles player, Ben Collins’ injury, the team had to overcome the loss of an important member of the team.

All members of the team stepped up to carry the team through a tough time.  Jack Schultze 20’ filled in for Collins until Collins was healthy enough to play.  After two months of being stuck in a back brace, Collins is more than ready to get back out on the court.

“I’m looking forward to finally playing a close match and tennis in general because I’ve skipped over the hard matches and only played three easy matches so far,” said an excited Collins.

Throughout the season the tennis team strives to get the best seeds for the bigger tournaments at the end of the season.   All the hardwork and motivation builds up for the ultimate test; states.  The tennis team will strive to travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan where the MHSAA state finals will be held.

Before competing in the state finals, the tennis team will have to do well in Regionals to qualify for states.

“I am really looking forward to Regionals,” said Graham Gillman-Haslem 20’.

The tennis team will attempt to continue their success on their home courts at the Canepa and Gainey Tennis courts on Sep 17 .  Singles will be playing at Canepa and Doubles will be playing at Gainey.  The pioneers will face off against Forest Hills Northern, Grandville, and Detroit Country Day.

Stop by both singles and doubles to watch the greatest show on court.
