Chicago is coming up quickly after a big weekend in Cleveland for the Great Lakes qualifier. After racing in regattas in Traverse City, Culver and Macatawa, the sailing team is ready to take on the Windy City.

The Great Lakes qualifier was the biggest regatta for the sailing team yet this season with 25 teams attending. Each team is allowed to take four sailors, Kate MacKeigan ‘19,  Murphy Wynsma ‘19, Hazel McGovern ‘21 and Annika Lampen ‘21, represented East.

Although the weather was 45 degrees and windy in Cleveland, MacKeigan and Wynsma skippered, managing the boat, while Lampen and McGovern crewed this past weekend. As a total they got into 18 races, and placed 10th overall.

“This weekend had really tough conditions but we were able to get top three in a handful of races.” MacKeigan said.

This coming weekend, Sept. 20 and 21, the team will be on the road once again for their state regatta at Pontiac Yacht Club. The team has high hopes of placing well at states and bringing home a state championship.

Murphy Wynsma, Kate MacKeigan, Hazel McGovern, and Caroline Grin ‘21 will be sailing for East this weekend with  Bella Kirchgessner ‘19 as their alternate. Annika Lampen will be racing in the laser regatta on Sunday.

“I’m really excited for states this weekend because I’m looking forward to showing everyone what our team has to offer. Although our team is small compared to most schools I think we can do really well this weekend if we sail our best, work hard, and come together as a team.” Lampen ’19 said.

The team is very excited and ready to race against some of the best sailing teams in Michigan.

“Our biggest competition is Grosse Isle and Black River.” MacKeigan said.

With their final races ahead of them the team has been preparing and practicing hard in order to have success at the state regatta.
