The Importance of Black History

Today we celebrate Black History for only one month, when in reality we should honor these talented individuals who have helped shape our society all year. I believe that Black history is more important in today’s society because we have beautiful Black kings and queens ruling the world and doing things that no white person ever thought would be possible.

When I say this I mean that, in today’s society, we are taught that white people are way better than African Americans could ever be and that is not the case at all.

There are many talented Black Kings and Queens who have done way better things than any other white Americans.

Black history is also important because it is a way of remembering and honoring individuals who have changed how society acts through their discoveries. These individuals fought for their lives to have equal rights to be better communities and to be the brothers and sisters that we were created to be.

There are so many great figures who have done so many great things like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Vaughan, Frederick Douglass, etc. Black history teaches you that we weren’t created to fight one another but we were created to stand by one another and cheer each other on. We were created to be one. We were created to be each other’s support. The world today has turned into a riot.

We have other white Americans who think that it is ok to say any and everything disrespectful towards Black people, including the infamous N-word. We have Black people being treated badly within the school systems.

We have students being taught by their parents that it is ok to be disrespectful to African Americans and commit the littlest microaggressions towards us. Some of these microaggressions include being called monkeys or talking about our features.

All of these things are being said in schools across the country and nothing happens, although it no longer comes as a shock to me when nothing happens to people who say the N-word.

These are problems that we as a society need to fix. Shirley Chisholm didn’t become the first African American woman to be elected to the United States Congress for African Americans to start thinking they are not good enough or not on the same level as white Americans.

Rosa Parks didn’t refuse to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery for Blacks to be put down. Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t fight for civil rights, and ultimately paid less than White people for the same work. We didn’t have a civil rights movement for nothing.

The civil rights movement happened so that we can have equal rights and equal everything in the world but today we are letting down these talented individuals who fought so hard for us because we can fulfill what it is that they have done for us. Lastly, we shouldn’t have African Americans scared of the people who are supposed to be making our world a better place by protecting us.

We shouldn’t have to think about whether we are going to get shot or killed today just by walking down the street. We shouldn’t have to think we are just as good as anyone in this world. We should think that we belong and it is hard to do that in the world we live in. I think that this is the biggest reason why we need to celebrate Black History Month within the times we live in now.

If we don’t stand up for what is right now or don’t change to be better people, who is going to? We need to have equal rights and that needs to start now.
