Girls’ and Boys’ Track shatter school records at 2017 state meet

Cade Vruggink ‘17 excelled at this year’s state meet this past Saturday, June 3rd by breaking the school’s mile record that was set in 1981. Vruggink ran the mile in 4 minutes and 17 seconds which got him a fifth place finish.
Ella Ludwig ‘17, Jessie Trube ‘18, Niki Ezeh ‘17, and Jenna Dykstra ‘20 broke the school record together on Saturday for the 4×1 relay with a time of 49.41. The previous record was 49.85 seconds, shattering it by .44 seconds. They placed 2nd at states overall and were thrilled with their outstanding performance.
Other East Grand Rapids girls athletes that had an outstanding performance at the state meet were Maddie McCahill ‘17, Emma Battle ‘19, Ana Grunewald ‘18, and Margaret Coney ‘20. These four athletes were a part of the 4×800 relay which placed third, and the 4×400 relay which placed fourth.
Niki Ezeh also scored big this past weekend by breaking her own old shot put school record, getting 2nd overall with a throw of 44’11. This is a new personal record for the now EGR alumna.
