On October 7, the five girls from the robotics team took the field at Wyoming High School for the West Michigan Girls Robotics Competition.

“We had an all girls drive team, which is the people doing stuff on the field,” Danielle DeRoseau ‘19 said. “Our pit crew was all girls too.”

Although this competition was a one time opportunity, the team did not waste their chance to show off their skills. Out of 22 schools, the EGR girls made it all the way to the semi-finals.

“We did really well during the qualifying matches and we even held the number one rank at one point,” Carlie Couzens ‘18 said. “We ended up ranking sixth, making us the sixth alliance.”

They were not able to take home the win, but the team was happy about how they performed, and felt that they did very well.

“We won the competition last year, so we were expecting to do well again this year. I think we performed pretty well,” DeRoseau said.

Not only was this a fun competition for the girls to be a part of, it helped to prepare them for the upcoming robotics season.

“There was definitely a steep learning curve, and we improved a ton from the first match to the last,” Couzens said. “None of the girls on our team had ever been a part of the drive team before, so it was definitely a fun experience.”

The new robotics season starts up this winter, and the team is already practicing to get ready. This competition allowed the girls on the team to experience a different part of robotics, and helped to prepare them for the upcoming season which begins Jan. 6 2018.
