D1 runners finish a strong season at States

A wave of sadness erupted from the Girls Cross Country team this year when their team was moved up to Division 1, making their path to States much harder. Even though it was not the season they expected it to be, because of a lot of hard work, Girls Cross Country gathered at Michigan International Speedway on Nov 4, to compete in the MHSAA State Finals in Brooklyn, Michigan.

They qualified as a team after placing second at regionals last weekend, Oct. 27, with Kate O’Connell ‘18, Sarah Cannon ‘18, Audrey Whiteside ‘19, Abby Theodorsdottir ‘19, Margaret Coney ‘20, Hannah Bodine ‘21, and Claire Cannon ‘21 running in the 5k race. The same top seven runners will compete this weekend against a lot of tough teams.

“Being division 1 for the first time ever gave us a lot more competition throughout the season. I’m really glad this happened though because it pushed us to work harder and resulted in lots of faster times,” Margaret Coney ‘20 said. “We all have surprised ourselves of what we were capable of accomplishing. I’m excited for this Saturday to see what we can accomplish and to leave it all out there.”

Overall, this change resulted in just a successful a season as the years before. With two seniors running for the team, next year’s team will be different. However, with two freshman, the runners will still be well off for next year. No matter what division the girls are next year, another successful season will be coming up thanks to a great coach and an extremely hard working team.

UPDATE: The cross country team got 13th overall as a team on Saturday, Nov 4. They are all very happy and proud of their team’s performance at States.
