As winter sports begin to wrap up, a couple of individuals season are not quite over. These two individuals are Maddox Lee ‘18 and John Shelton ‘22 who are both headed to the State Championship representing EGR’s Wrestling Team.

Hours and hours of training in the weight room and in the school gym has paid off for these two.

Both Lee’s and Shelton’s results do not come off as a surprise because they have shown consistent success throughout the season. Lee placed third at the Kent County Championship and also placed first at the Hasting Invitational. This season, Lee has a record of 41 wins and 8 losses. “I found success this year by working hard and never giving up,” Lee said.

Shelton placed first at conferences, second at regionals, and is currently ranked third in the state with a record of 45 wins and 3 losses. All three losses came from Senior David Kruse who is ranked number one in the state. Shelton has shown that being an underclassmen is not a problem for him, since this will be his second year heading to the State Championship. “The season has gone well for me. I’m 45-3, so I would have to say it has been a pretty good season,“ said Shelton.

The team placed third at conferences and lost to Lowell in the District finals.

Another key player in the team’s success is Senior Michael Afton. This being his last season, Afton gave it his all hoping to advance to the State Championship. Although Afton did not advance to states, he had a very strong season. Afton placed second at the Kent County Championship and took third place at the West Catholic Invitational.

The State Championship will take place on March 2nd and 3rd in Detroit at Ford Field.
