The EGR baseball team has had a strong start to their season, getting off to a 9-4 record. Although the season is young, it has already been filled with some fun and exciting games.

“We have had a couple good games” Ben Biermacher ‘19 said. “Just last Saturday, we had two extra inning games against Traverse City West. We won one and lost one, and those were both exciting games.”

Winning baseball games involves a combination of good pitching, hitting, and defense. This season, the team has come to understand that when one of those three fails, the other two have improve and get stronger if they want to win.

“We know that our pitchers aren’t going to shut every team out, so we are trying to find ways to score as many runs as we can” Biermacher said. “We are trying to hit as well as we can so we can give our defense a chance to win us games.”

Putting the bat on the ball is not an easy task. However during practice, the boys have been putting most of their focus on hitting, so they can get on a roll and score some runs in the games.

“We usually hit for about 30 minutes every practice. Then we work on situational hitting, so if you have two strikes on you, try to hit a ground ball the other way to move the runners over, and we work on bunting a lot” Biermacher said.

The team hopes to continue their good hitting, and continue to improve on their pitching and defense. As the season goes on, they are working hard towards trying to win a state championship.

“Our first goal is to win a conference championship” Biermacher said. “After that, we can move on to a district championship, then a regional championship, and then hopefully, a state championship.”
