Blaise Gourley, Staff Writer

Downtown Grand Rapids is a hot spot for families, young hipsters, successful business people year round, however the winter season always seems to be most popular for city-goers. The wide array of winter activities offered Downtown will undoubtedly draw in the crowds this holiday season.

Rosa Parks Circle is a family favorite for many, and it’s annual transformation into an ice skating rink serves as a great activity for all ages. Renting a pair of ice skates and gliding under the twinkling lights can make any night magical, not to mention grabbing a warm cup of hot chocolate that makes even the coldest weather seem bearable.

Another annual upcoming event is Grand Rapids Ballet’s The Nutcracker opening Friday, Dec 14 at Devos Performing Hall. This ballet, accompanied by live music from Grand Rapids Symphony is guaranteed to get the audience in the holiday spirit.

For major hockey fanatics, the Grand Rapids Griffins season is amping up as we move further along into winter. Fans can buy tickets to watch them play at Van Andel Arena all the way into the spring.

This next event proves that Downtown Grand Rapids truly has something for everyone this winter season. If you love Harry Potter, then the famous Yule Ball is perfect for you. Held at 20 Monroe Live on Dec 8, wizards, witches, and muggles alike can enjoy butterbeer, the photobooth, and entertainment from Harry and the Potters and Desmond Jones.

There’s no better way to get into the holiday spirit than participating in fun winter activities. There is bound to be something for everyone this year, so go out and explore Downtown Grand Rapids while the the cold weather lasts.
