What’s new with winter sports: Girls Basketball

Although the girls varsity basketball team has only three returning seniors, they are loaded with young promising players.

The team welcomes two freshman and two sophomores this year. Among these underclassmen, is standout sophomore, Jillian Brown. Jillian Brown is a second year varsity player and aided in the team’s success last year. Brown is hoping for an as successful season this year, as last year.

“We have four returning starters, so we will have a lot of chemistry,” Jillian Brown said. “We also push the ball really well and run the floor a lot which was important in our success last year and will be this year.”

Mary Schumar ‘19 is another experienced player on the team. Schumar is excited about the change in team dynamic this season.

“I am really looking forward to this season because we have a young but very talented team” Schumar said. “We all have different unique skills that make us all work really well together.”

Schumar was pulled up to varsity her freshman year for playoffs and has remained on varsity since.

Four year returning varsity player and the other half of the Brown Dynamic Duo is older sister, Olivia Brown. Olivia Brown has big goals for this upcoming season.

“This season I’m looking forward to the team bonding and trying to compete for a state championship,” Olivia Brown said. “My goals this season are for our team to win conference, districts, and make it to Calvin.”

Olivia Brown recently signed her Letter of Intent to play Division I basketball at St. Bonaventure University and her experience as a four year varsity player will be a crucial component in the team’s success this year.
