After a long three months of quarantine, Jack Webb ‘21 created a backyard project where he and his family and friends enjoy the space. He dug the hole for the bunker and green and hired a company to finish it. While facing some challenges with the company, overall it was worth the wait.

“I am very proud of the finished project. The company did a great job although they were one month delayed in finishing the work,” Webb said. “However, once I was said and done it turned out to be a great green and provided great fun for me and my friends.” During these difficult times and weird ways of doing school, the green has provided an outlet for the Webb family to take a break and play in their backyard.

Spencer Millwood ‘21, one of Webb’s closest friends, has enjoyed the space as well. With the location of the green, the boys are allowed to have some fun and try difficult shots. “We hit shots from the driveway or middle school field more often than we putt. As competitive as we all are, there’s never a dull moment with all of us over there,” Millwood said.

The green has provided a fun and relaxed atmosphere to their backyard along with multiple competitions as well. “ We often have fun in competitions at night and I often see the members of my family practicing putts or chipping in the afternoon,” Webb said.

While nothing beats going to the golf course, the ease of the green and the proximity is nice for a break and hanging out with friends. “The green is nice for easy access to practice short putts and chips however nothing beats a real golf course,” Webb said. Golf courses are pretty far away, so it is a good thing to have in their backyard if they are limited on time and still want to practice and put in some reps.

The green has been a social setting where time is spent and memories are made. “My friends and I use it often. Oftentimes on the weekend Spencer and Jack [Seufert ‘21] will come over and spend hours and hours chipping and putting on the green. It is so much fun,” Webb said.

With a creative mind and love of golf, Webb was able to create a space that he will cherish the memories forever, even past his years at East.

“Everywhere we go, we’re always thinking about the green or practice area that could be incorporated into an empty space,” Millwood said. “I think seeing this project finished so well has definitely inspired me to make it a priority to have some sort of practice area in my backyard once I’m older.”
