U of M commit: Macy Brown wins the Miss Basketball award
EGR’s very own Macy Brown recently received the highly decorated Michigan Miss Basketball. The award is voted on by coaches across the state and given to the best senior basketball player each year. Brown is the 42nd annual Miss Basketball and the first winner on the west side of the state since 2017.
Throughout her high school career, Brown gained attention for her outstanding basketball skill and sportsmanship. She currently is EGRs all-time leading scorer with over 1,500 points. Breaking a record previously held by her sister Jillian Brown ‘20. Brown is currently committed to playing Division I basketball at the University of Michigan, following in the footsteps of both of her older sisters who also currently play Division I basketball. Her oldest sister Olivia ‘18 at Valparaiso University and Jillian ‘20 at Northwestern University
“Growing up and being surrounded by my sisters playing basketball gave me people to look up to and strive to be. they were great role models and they constantly led and paved the way for my basketball career,” Brown said
Brown has been playing basketball for 12 years, beginning her journey in first grade playing for East Hills on a weekend league. She then moved on to play for Michigan Basketball Academy, her travel team, where she has played ever since.
Brown’s experience at EGR has been extremely successful. She has been a four-year varsity starter and two-year captain, exhibiting her impeccable leadership skills. She would thank her experience at EGR and give her coaches and teammates credit for her success.
“I am most grateful for all of my teammates, coaches, and all of the support me and my team have received this year from the EGR community, the team this year was so special and I wouldn’t have traded this season for anything,” Brown said.
In 2020, her sister, Jillian Brown was also nominated for the award, which made Brown realize she wanted it.
“Miss Basketball is a huge honor and it means so much to me. The best part is being able to bring this award to EGR for the first time. It also means a lot to know my hard work has paid off, along with everyone who helped me earn this award,” Brown said.
She played with Jillian her freshman year, creating a special experience for the sisters, who now will take the court together again during Brown’s college career, this time on opposing teams.
Next year, Brown is looking forward to taking her basketball skill and leadership to Ann Arbor where she will play for the University of Michigan Women’s basketball team. She is also looking forward to playing against her sister Jillian.
“Growing up watching my sisters play in high school, I always wanted to start on the high school team and play in front of my classmates. but as I got older my goal became playing division 1 college basketball,” Brown said.
EGR applauds Brown for her outstanding hard work and dedication to the sport of basketball and looks forward to watching her throughout the next four years.
