After watching the Anyone But You movie, we could only think of “any movie but this one.” Anyone But You truly fell short of the high expectations TikTok created for this movie.
Anyone But You follows Beatrice (or Bee), a law school student struggling to find direction in her life, and Ben, whom she meets in a coffee shop. After their meet-cute, it’s truly love at first sight, until after they fall asleep while hanging out and Bee leaves him alone. They have an incident, which leads to them hating one another.
Six months later, Bee’s sister starts dating Ben’s best friend’s sister, and Bee and Ben meet again, where they lambast one another. Of course, Bee’s sister and Ben’s best friend’s sister end up getting married and are going to have a destination wedding in Australia. Bee and Ben both attend the wedding and for the wedding to go smoothly, Bee and Ben decide to “compromise” to make everyone else happy. We’ll avoid saying more to avoid any spoilers.
This is a classic enemies-to-lovers movie, except for the fact that it never really felt like they were enemies. Yeah, they hated each other, but their tension was awful, and their chemistry when they were on fine terms was still bad too.
Our main problem with this movie, though, is that it was so generic that it was practically AI-generated. It follows every structure of a rom-com, but it’s overly predictable. I know that most rom-coms are predictable, but they at least have some other parts that are good to it. In this movie, the characters are truly awful which makes it hard to enjoy.
Additionally, the dialogue fell flat which was surprising given the talent that was the cast. After seeing Sydney Sweeney’s emotional range in HBO’s Euphoria and Glen Powell in the heavily applauded 2022 Top Gun: Maverick, the pair’s performance in Anyone But You seemed laughable.
Ultimately, we don’t recommend this movie. We do love rom-coms, but suggest that instead of watching this movie and wasting your money and time you watch any other rom-com at your house.
