Much like their female counterparts, the boys’ swim team stands as a force in competition. This season they return with even greater determination following a heartbreaking loss at the state championship last year. Overcoming adversity, they grapple not only with the memory of their defeat but also with the absence of their beloved coach, Chris, who passed away in late 2023.
“It’s been very hard for the team but I think we are still striving to improve our team dynamic every day, ” Carter Kegle ’24 said.
Their season has started on a high note with the guidance of senior captains Kegle, Micah Spitzley ‘24, and Henry Vandermolen ‘24, steering the team toward success. As a team, they set their sights on defeating Cranbrook and winning the D-3 state championship.
Despite securing second place in their first meet of the season, they refuse to back down. They came back winning the tri-meet against Hamilton and Holland Christian. While their collective goal is fixed on the state championship, they all have personal goals of their own.
“My personal goals are to get the state title in the 500 free and get the high point award,” Kegle said.
Sophomore Oliver Chu has proven instrumental since joining the team as a freshman. Consistently contributing to points and great leadership.
“I would like to shout out Oliver Chu for being so versatile in the pool. He can swim whatever event we need him in, to score the most points possible,” Kegle said. Chu, in turn, expressed his objective for the year, vowing to improve his times and do a good job supporting his teammates.
Their dominance continues with victories over FHC by over 20 points, as well as against Grand Rapids Christian, Grand Haven, and Detroit Country Day. Currently, seven members of the team have gotten their state cuts. Congratulations to Carter Kegle, Micah Spitzly, Oliver Chu, Charlie Chappus, Grey Flermoen, Henry Vandermolen and Luke P. We all hope your hard work will pay off and we add another plaque to the championship wall.
