It is East Vision policy to avoid having staff members included in our paper. We rarely quote members, let alone write articles about them. But this article, about Staff Writer Charlie Seufert ‘24, is an exception. This month, Seufert was honored with the MHSAA scholar-athlete award and given a scholarship to use towards his college education. The award is given to 32 Michigan high school athletes and is worth $2,000. The MHSAA website says it is “… based on achievement and leadership in athletics and activities, as well as responses to short-answer and essay questions. In many ways, this is the most prestigious honor of the MHSAA annual awards.”
Seufert is a two-sport athlete at EGR.
“I am a three-year, all-state varsity tennis player, and I’m a three-year varsity golfer, and a 2 year captain,” Seufert said. “It’s just an honor to be a recipient of such a legendary award. I’ve worked my entire high school career to earn something like this.”
Seufert’s favorite sport is golf and he has worked his way to becoming a scratch golfer, meaning he can, on average, shoot par or better on any golf course.
“Golf has brought me a lot of opportunities and experiences like going out to Pebble Beach and playing professional golf or going into Golf Digest, having an article written about me, and the countless times I’ve been put on television for it,” Seufert said.
Seufert, a recipient of a heart transplant last school year, faced many challenges along the way to receive this honor.
“I think a large reason I won the award is because I face many more difficulties than others. I’ve had some unique challenges while playing sports throughout my life and being able to bounce back from a bad day has helped me learn perseverance. I use those lessons during challenges I’ve faced and then I displayed that in an essay and represented East Grand Rapids the best I could,” Seufert said.
