Football season kicks off this Thursday on the grass fields of Lowell. A big season opener against a powerhouse team will set the tone for this season. Not only has the football team been training tirelessly all summer, but the student section is selling out the USA gear on every shelf in Grand Rapids, ready to cheer on our mighty Pios.
The football team has always had a unique twist to it. Last year, one big aspect of the program was that the team played two quarterbacks back and forth throughout each quarter. With our other starting quarterback having graduated, Carson Thornton ‘25 is named our only starting quarterback.
The summer has been a good time to prepare for his final season, but things have only just begun.
“I think we are going to be one of the best offenses in the state personally, but you never know what will happen,” Thornton said.
The team is stacked with great defenders and as we all know, defense is what wins the game, with teammates Matthew Rose ‘25 and Will Zyskowski ‘25 leading defense.
With this team being as tight-knit as they are, we can only hope that their connection off the field can continue on the field throughout the season. From practices to scrimmages, our football team looks strong, having a tough schedule.
“I’d say for the most part our schedule is pretty tough, we have a few state championship opponents, so overall, it’s gonna be a pretty tough season but we’re excited about it. Catholic Central and Forest Hills Central are probably our biggest opponents that we are looking forward to,” Thornton said.
Not only do the boys seem excited but the student section and fans around town cannot wait to see these boys reach their overall potential as a team. Make sure to be at Lowell at 7 p.m. in your best USA!
