Boys Crew has been ramping up these past few years, with an exorbitant increase in participation and brand-new facilities.
“We’re deeper than we’ve ever been,” Captain Charlie Ferguson ‘25 said. “We have a larger core to our team, we have a lot more varsity guys than we’ve had in the past”.
The new facilities have been working, and the advantage of the new boathouse has allowed for more and easier training on urgs (machines that stimulate rowing).
“They’re a lot faster than they’ve been in the past,” Captain Sawyer Bigler ‘25 said.
With the growth of the team, there also come some struggles. Ferguson and Bigler were the only two to bring home Gold at states this past year in their JV double.
Ferguson and Bigler won their double by almost 10 seconds, and hope to bring it home again this year in the Varsity competition against teams like Haverford, the U.S. Youth National Team, Skyline, and Forest Hills Central (FHC).
Due to constantly getting “waked-out” (getting hit by waves from other boats), Ferguson thinks rowing in a lake is a disadvantage compared to a river, due to less water traffic. The aforementioned team FHC is one such team, but the boys still try to stay optimistic.
The Boys’ first regatta is on Sep. 21, the Head of the Cuyahoga, so make sure to support Boy’s Crew!
