On January 13, 2025, Shango Gilbert, a valued member of the East Grand Rapids High School Staff, suddenly passed away at age 55. Born on October 18, 1969, Shango brought passion to every role he undertook throughout his life.
Joining the East Grand Rapids custodian staff in March of 2019, he made an immediate impact with his can-do attitude and willingness to help anyone. “He was the type of guy to help me out without hesitation. He would give you everything he could and would completely empty the tank for you,” said head custodian, Mr. Towne (Bruce).
A kind-hearted and hard-working man, he was a true testament to what it means to be a Pioneer and embodied the characteristics of not only a wonderful individual but also custodian. Whether it was cleaning the cafeteria or mopping the floors, he did it with a smile on his face. His charisma and passion radiated through the halls, and his attitude toward life, people, and his profession was inspiring.
While at times timid and reserved, if you took the initiative to have a conversation with Shango, it was always something of value. He never failed to exert both kindness and curiosity. If you stuck around long enough, he might have even mentioned his love and passion for Mo-Town Music.
“What I appreciate the most about Mr. Gilbert was his kindness and positivity towards life,” said Principal Dr. Schukow
The loss of Shango will be felt, but it is up to us as members of his community to honor him and try to demonstrate the values that made Shango such an amazing person. “We can emulate Shango by treating people with kindness and doing our best to maintain a positive attitude,” said English Teacher Sara Edleman.
Shango’s passing should be a grounding experience for many. Just as we loved Shango, love one another, and let the people around you know they are valued. He will be missed as a friend, coworker, brother, and, most importantly, an important member of our community.
