The EGR We the People team has had another successful year, coming in second at the State competition and qualifying for Nationals in the spring.
Placing at states takes an immense amount of time, energy, and preparation, as well as teamwork from every individual unit. Students spend time over winter break practicing for states and refining their knowledge.
“We spent a lot of time prepping for states with multiple practices over winter break at peoples’ houses, where we polished responses and constantly quizzed the team,” Harry Cornell ‘25, a coach for Unit 6 said.
The hard work students put in outside of school significantly helped the team find success at states.
“They really improved during break and proved it at states by qualifying for nationals,” Cornell said.
Cornell was particularly proud of his own unit, and their ability to succeed in high-pressure situations.
“I was really proud in particular of Unit 6 who I had the opportunity to coach. They thought on their feet really well and worked really well together as a unit to answer the questions,” Cornell said.
Adam Horos, who teaches the class, also thought the individual units all performed strongly, but particularly enjoyed watching units 2 and 5 at the state competition.
“One highlight was definitely watching Unit 5, I thought they really showed their constitutional knowledge. Also seeing Unit 2 get really high scores from the judges was really great to see,” Horos said.
Throughout the year, the time spent to prepare for the various competitions students compete at bonds individual units and fosters friendships between teammates.
“Watching every unit work well together was amazing, we didn’t have a single group that struggled,” Horos said.
With states behind them, the team looks ahead to Nationals, where they hope to perform their best against a multitude of difficult opponents.
“We are hoping to place as best as possible. We have a scrimmage coming up with Ann Arbor Pioneer for the next month so that will be a good litmus test for us and I’m sure we’ll learn a lot,” Cornell said.
No matter what happens in the spring, Horos looks forward to Nationals as an opportunity for growth for this year’s students.
“I am so excited to take this group of students to Nationals. They’ve worked really hard, they’re super smart, and it’s such an amazing opportunity. I couldn’t be more excited,” Horos said.
