Looking for a new class to take next year? Look no further.
Taught by Mr. Szpieg, gone boarding is a unique class offered at the high school primarily for upperclassmen.
“I decided to take gone boarding because I really like art and I’ve never really had the experience to make a board to this degree, so I was excited to make some sort of board,” Olivia Bolling ‘25 said.
In gone boarding, students have a variety of boards they can make.
“Gone boarding is a class where you can create a skateboard, surfboard, snowboard, wakeboard, and any type of board you’d like,” Reagan Weaver ‘25 said.
For the most part, many students choose to make surfboards or longboards. Many students also decided to make multiple boards.
“I am making a surfboard and a longboard,” Weaver said.
As it’s unlike many classes at East, gone boarding provides new learning opportunities for students. Students learn how to make boards independently and at their own pace.
There isn’t a typical day in gone boarding, as it’s very dynamic, and daily plans constantly change.
“Every day in gone boarding is different. A lot of times, especially early on in the class, Szpieg is talking and explaining things about the class or giving us demos on how to use the tools,” Weaver said.
Part of what makes the class worthwhile is the satisfaction of seeing the end product.
“My favorite memory from gone boarding is when I stood my finished board up and was able to see it all completed and all of the work put into it to achieve that look,” Addison Clark ‘25 said.
Ultimately, gone boarding is a great experience for upperclassmen.
“Other students should take gone boarding because there really isn’t a class like it. So if students get the chance to take gone boarding, there’s a lot of fun people in the class and we get to do things that require a lot of hands-on learning and creative thinking,” Bolling said.
