Team Games:
One of the sports classes that East offers, Team Games revolves around, well, team games. Each class period, after a brief warm up period, Mrs. Wagenmaker offers a variety of collaborative sports for her students to play.
“I’m a big advocate of sports,” said Wagenmaker, who has taught the class for 15 years.
The class has participated in a wide range of games, from pickleball to floor hockey. The latter, a favorite of the class, often ends in nail-biting shootouts.
“I like being able to get some of my energy out in school,” Rowen Bishop ‘25 noted about the course, “it’s good to get out of the class sometimes.”
Everyone has experienced it – when you have too much energy, it can be hard to concentrate and learn in school. By having a dedicated hour to run around and play games with your classmates, your ability to pay attention and your performance in other classes can certainly increase.
The Team Games class can be found channeling their competitive spirits no matter what. They usually spend most of their time in the aux gym or the main gym, although they go outside a majority of the time when the weather is nice.
The class is a great way to…
Weight Lifting:
Another sports class that you can take at East, the Weight Lifting class meets in our weight training room each day. Mr. Reed, an avid lifter himself, has taught the class for all three years of its running.
“It’s very different from just going to any old gym and just doing bench,” Reed said.
On a typical day, the lifters complete both core and auxiliary lifts that Reed plans out for them. After they have free time to complete their own choice of lifting. Core lifts are some of the more usual lifts, such as squats and deadlifts. They also do a lot of auxiliary lifts including pushups, situps, and curls.
For the students who take lifting class, the extra time is a major benefit. Being able to work out during the school day frees up time outside of school to focus on things like sports practices, homework, and jobs. Another benefit of lifting class is the expert instruction that can be missing when you lift on your own.
“Mr. Reed really values your time,” lifter John Flermoen ‘27 said, “we’re always doing something productive.”
If you’re looking to improve your physical fitness and athletic performance while saving time outside of school, consider signing up for weight lifting.
