Brisk weather and sun-less skies can often put a stop to social activities and events. When the temperature begins to drop, so do people’s interest in getting out. But not here in Michigan. The World of Winter festival, hosted here in downtown Grand Rapids, is America’s largest winter festival and one of the “top 10 Most Epic U.S. Winter Festivals Worth Braving the Cold For.” With a variety of activities for every age, the festival brightens people’s days across West Michigan.
With hopes to bring people together and out into the community, World of Winter lasts from January 10th through March 2nd. Having both indoor and outdoor activities, World of Winter is both family friendly and appealing to young adults. This festival and its activities are also almost entirely free to enjoy.
The festival features around 100 art installations from artists all over the world. You can take guided tour walks or just stroll through on your own. It also includes live performances for all ages, which includes a DJ set. Additionally, giant Litebrite board games, an interactive LED bonfire, yard games, and ice skating ensure that there is something for everyone exploring downtown. One of the featured activities this year was a “human” Hungry Hippos tournament hosted on February 23.
As the festival starts to come to a close, some of its final events are the Noodle Fest on March 1 11:00 am – 6:00 pm. On the 2nd there will be a guided walking tour through all of the art installations 6-7 pm.
There are over 60 downtown Grand Rapids businesses that offer beverages and food, along with food trucks at World of Winter for purchase. From tacos to donuts and other treats, this is a great way to support local businesses and explore what downtown has to offer.
Although the festival is coming to a close for the 2025 season, it is still a great time to get out while you can and see it for yourself!
