As we move into the 2025-2026 school year, we yet again dive into the electrifying sport of football. Headed by the star QB Josh McCune ‘26, the team looks to improve from last season. With the loss of 27 seniors last year, the new era of players looks to step up to the challenge.
Although the team lost the home opener to Lowell 40-7, they are looking to turn things around in the weeks to come. Our single touchdown comes from QB McCune with a 74-yard sneak. Backup quarterback Tripp Hoekstra ‘27 also got some playing time in the game, making it his first varsity appearance of the year.
“It was awesome to experience that atmosphere for the first time,” Hoekstra said.
Looking ahead, the team aims to focus on the small details that can be improved for each upcoming game.
“We want to take it one game at a time, we’re not going to worry about one loss,” Charlie Inhulsen ‘26 said.
After a successful game against South Christian on Sept. 5, with a final score of 21-0, the team remained in complete control to take home their first win of the season. The team took an early 7-0 lead off a fumble return touchdown, on the opening kickoff by the star Zach Caswell ‘26. This play was followed by a pair of touchdowns from McCune.
“We were just dominant up front and had control over the game,” Wade Happel ‘26 said.
For the homecoming matchup against Grand Rapids Christian on Sep. 12, the boys easily managed the game with a 38-7 victory. After McCune led the team with the first touchdown, the boys were rolling. Dylan Buck ‘26 was found in the deep end by McCune, putting the ball right in the bread basket for Buck to run it in for the 2nd touchdown.
On Fri, Sept. 19, the boys played Catholic Central in a true head-to-head battle. Both teams gave it their all. East scored first with a touchdown from Caswell. The Cougars answered with a field goal and later with a touchdown. With the seconds winding down, McCune throws a high ball to Asa Cox ‘27. The ball was intercepted, resulting in a 10-7 victory for the Cougars. Despite such a close game, the boys will play Northview on Fri, Sept. 26, and are ready for redemption to take home another win.
