PTO cardboard regatta fundraiser raises money for middle school

On most beautiful autumn days, Reeds Lake is populated with sailboats, motor boats, and the high school crew team, but on Friday September 29 much different vessels will set sail: cardboard boats handcrafted by the East Grand Rapids Middle School students to contribute to the annual PTO fundraiser in a mini regatta.

This middle school fundraiser will sponsor events such as The Music Man Jr., the Robotics and Science Olympiad teams, intramural activities, Shakespeare Club, and Field Day. In past years the fundraiser has financed amenities such as social studies trade books and an innovation lab extension.  Selling magazines has been the previous money-raising strategy but Leslie Papp, PTO Co-President, is excited for the change.

Altogether the PTO is hoping to raise $20,000 dollars via corporate sponsorships. This will be the only major fundraiser held for the middle school this 2017-2018 school year. To donate please visit the PTO webpage on the East Grand Rapids Middle School website.

Making fundraising a competitive event will probably accomplish more than simply raising money; it will build community among students, teachers, and parents alike in East Grand Rapids.
