The boy’s water polo team is ready to make a splash this season and reach the state championship for the first time in 18 years.
The team has been practicing for a long time to get ready for this season. Most of the members played on various club teams over the summer or conditioned through competitive swimming.
“We did captain’s practices all throughout the winter, and during summer we would lift and swim a lot,” Charlie Chappus ‘25 said. “Also, we practiced three times a day for a total of six hours a day in August.”
As the official first practice for the team was August 7, the group has already played all of their pre-season games.
“It’s been a little bit of a shaky start, as our pre-season record was 2-10, and the practices have been rough,” Jackson Deane ‘26 said. “We have to do hard conditioning to be good, though.”
So far, the team has played against Grand Haven, Ann Arbor Pioneer, Rockford, and a few other schools. Even though the boys are still “waiting for some things to click,” Harsh Nigam ‘24 said, the team is starting off their conference games well.
“We are starting to finally put all the stuff together,” Chappus said. “We won our first conference seeding game, 19-2, against East Lansing.”
The group has high aspirations to make the state championship, as captains Nigam, Andrew Chambers ‘24, Jacob Klug ‘24, and Cam Hill ‘25 are leading the team to be their best.
“The games are really fun to go to and they’re really high-scoring, so you should definitely try to come if you can,” Chappus said.
