National Honors Society, or NHS, is a nationwide organization available to 11th and 12th graders. It is in place to recognize high school students for their many qualities in helping the community as well as their academic achievements.
“At the end of the sophomore and junior years, the counseling office, specifically our registrar, gives me a list of students who have a weighted GPA of 3.75 or above.” Tim Farmer, NHS advisor said. “It is an honor to belong to NHS as it is a national organization,” Farmer said.
To be able to join NHS, you have to, first off, have a 3.75 weighted GPA as an 11th or 12th-grade student to recognize academic achievements. In addition, you have to have characteristics that will help society as well.
“They need to, as a process of that application, identify five teachers who can vouch for their character, teachers whom they’ve had for at least one semester, and they have to submit evidence of ten service and leadership activities that they participated in throughout their high school career of which they spent a minimum of 10 hours.” Farmer said.
These activities do not have to be school-related, just activities that can support one’s character.
There is an NHS ceremony that took place on March 12th this year. The ceremony is a recognition of the students who participate. In the ceremony, the name of everyone that had been inducted was read and a certificate congratulating the induction was also given.
“The ceremony is just meant to be a combination of a recognition and congratulatory ceremony for not only meeting the requirements but also going through the process of applying,” Farmer said.
Students involved in NHS say it’s a positive experience as well. “It’s nice to have a ceremony to be recognized for your success and to also be there with all your other friends who are also in it,” Sophia Carnevale, Co- President ‘24 said.
Also, from a student perspective, NHS is great for opportunities after high school.
“I think that it’s really good for college apps and it’s really a fun experience to be recognized for your academic success in high school,” Carnevale said.
It can also serve as preparation for endeavors that students might partake in at the collegiate level.
“It can prepare you if you want to do the honors program in college, NHS is really good for that,” Carnevale said.
Being a part of NHS is a great opportunity for a student if they meet the requirements. It is essentially a way to recognize the excellence that is present in the students of our community.
“It’s a way to recognize the outstanding character, service, leadership, and scholarship of our juniors and seniors,” Farmer concluded.
