Today the judgement of the East Grand Rapids Public Schools was put into question, when students staff were required to come to school with a layer of slippery ice covering the sidewalks and road.  Students reported seeing as many as three emergency vehicles on the way to school, and 89% of students claim to have fallen on The East Vision’s poll on the Instagram account.

Eventually, members of the staff including Mr. Wojakowski and Mr. Weigel put down salt on the sidewalks for the students, but not after slipping and falling themselves. Teachers like Ms. Mapes and Sra. Mercado-Blackport were injured and unable to finish a full school day; Ms. Mapes going to the emergency room before even making it into the school and Sra. Mercado-Blackport leaving halfway through the day after receiving a blow to the head.  Many students fell and some ended up in the hospital, like Robby Hooker who required stitches.

Bella Olsen ‘20 said that school “absolutely should’ve been cancelled… many of our talented and hardworking faculty members have been injured, we should not have to stand for this kind of disregard for our safety.”

Paige Leistra ‘20 also reported seeing “at least three people who got in crashes, and I almost got in one too.”

Although tardies were disregarded for the first hour, was it worth it to refrain from having a two hour delay?  This would have likely prevented accidents from occurring to both students and staff, allowing the city to ice main roads and allowing for a safe trip to school.
