Varsity boys golf off to a swinging start
The Boys Golf team is in full swing this spring.
Their first match was against Catholic Central, originally scheduled for March 30th. They went into their match strong, but it did not take long for heavy rain and thunderstorms to begin.
On April 11, the team showed up to Thousand Oaks Golf Club, their home course, at approximately 3:45 for a rescheduled match. Even over spring break, members of the team continued to play on their own time.
“We were nervous,” Cooper Bell ‘18 said. “We knew we had a huge match in front of us.”
The weather conditions provided for an extra challenge, as there were gusty winds. Bell, however, still managed to score a 43.
“I felt pretty accomplished about [my score]. That was the lowest for both teams, so I was excited,” Bell said.
The team ultimately lost 192-190.
“We didn’t go easy on them; we played our best,” Bell said.
The team is now looking ahead to their upcoming matches against Forest Hills Central, Lowell, and Jenison. Some team members feel that having many underclassmen on the team will be a disadvantage for them.
“It will affect us because we don’t have as much experience as other teams do. We won’t have as much experience for regionals and states, but we can make a better team,” Bell said.
From their loss against Catholic Central to their lack of experience, the season won’t be easy, but Bell knows that teamwork and focus will bring them success.
