With a new year brings more boys hockey goals and wins

After closing out 2022 with two dominating wins over rivals Forest Hills Central and Grand Rapids Christian, the East Grand Rapids Pioneers hockey team looks to bring in the new year with some more wins over their upcoming opponents.

Captains Tyler Sikkenga ‘23 and Mason Keyes ‘23 hope to lead their squad to victories against upcoming opponents Mattawan, Forest Hills Central, and Kenowa Hills. The Pioneers had the unique opportunity to play in the annual Billy Bear Hug Bear Toss game against Catholic Central.

Unfortunately, even with the valiant comeback effort, the team was unable to come out on top, dropping the game with a score of 2-3. This leaves the Pioneers sitting with a record of 5-5-1. Though not necessarily reflected by the record, the team’s young core has shown tremendous growth from where they started in November.

Ian MacKeigan ‘24 and Charlie Hoekstra ‘24 are both showing tremendous upside, tied for second in goals (5) as well as points (9). In hopes of taking this momentum into the second half of the season, the team needs to stay focused on getting more shots on goal, and slowing down while on the attack.

Sticking to the fundamentals and staying out of the penalty box should be just enough to dominate the second half of the season, then make a strong playoff push with the ultimate goal of reaching the state championship.
