Despite the long-awaited snowfall, the weather for skiing is finally adequate. The team must rely on the weather’s cooperation unless they are lifting. Due to the irregular Michigan weather, depending on consistent snowfall without the interruption of rain or warm weather is unreasonable.
Even with these challenges, the ski team is still excited and ready for their winter season. Lifting together every Tuesday and Thursday, the team has increased their strength in the gym. The racers have developed a strong bond, grit, and endurance from their training.
Even though the season had a late start, this won’t hold them back from a successful winter. The team’s hard work in the weight room will be applied to the slopes in the upcoming months.
During the actual season, the times of practice and races vary. Although, you should expect to find them on the slopes at least three times a week. Their practices include a quick warm-up, free runs, and then training with gates.
“We always work hard and take our practices seriously. With so few practices during the season, it’s important to take advantage of every opportunity we get,” Brayden Winkel ‘27 said.
Occasionally, the racers are timed during practices to gain an idea of what their times might look like on race day.
“My practice times are usually similar or a little slower than they will be on race day. It’s important for me to keep improving my times during practice, as if it’s an actual race,” Koster said.
They mainly run a slalom course, focusing on technical work and tighter turns. Once in a while, they run a GS course, which works on wider turns and tucking to improve aerodynamics.
Having such a small team, the racers realize the importance of such a strong bond. The underclassmen all have great upperclassmen role models.
“All the older girls on the team are really nice and great skiers. They’re easy to talk to and fun to be around. I’ve enjoyed watching them race this season,” Winkel said.
The team is excited and prepared for the rest of the winter. Despite the unfortunate weather, the team is willing to make the most out of their season regardless.
