The East Grand Rapids ski teams are racing full speed into the heart of their winter season, building momentum through experience, leadership, and strong team chemistry. Both the girls and boys teams have shown determination and confidence as they work toward a shared goal of postseason success.
The East Grand Rapids Girls Ski Team is shaping up to be one of the strongest groups the program has seen in years. With a roster of 14 skiers, the team’s depth and off-season dedication have set a strong foundation for the season.
“I feel like we have a lot of girls, so we are going to be a strong team,” Willa Norden ‘27 said.
Coaches have echoed this confidence, pointing to both the numbers and the experience on the roster. Many of the skiers have been involved in the sport since childhood. Norden has been skiing since she was three and racing since fourth grade, a background shared by several teammates.
Beyond skill, team chemistry has become one of the girls’ greatest strengths. Their closeness helps them stay focused after tough runs and celebrate strong performances together.
“We always support one another by watching each other race and cheering each other on,” Lauren Kistka ‘27 said. “I like being a part of a group of people who are really motivating.”
Team traditions and time spent together outside of competition have also strengthened those bonds. The girls often stay at team houses before races and train regularly at Nubs Nob. This year’s state finals will be held at Schuss Mountain.
“We have a lot of traditions that we do during races, such as taking cookies and putting them in our pockets,” Norden said.
Leadership has played a key role in the team’s success, according to sophomore Sophia Hicks ‘27.
“The seniors work really hard to lead us to be our best,” Hicks said. “We have to cheer each other on a lot to continue to improve.”
Hicks, who has been skiing since age three and racing since she was ten, delivered a standout performance at the Harbor/Petoskey Invitational on Jan. 5, finishing seventh in slalom and fourth in giant slalom.
“I was shocked because the Traverse City Central girls are really good,” Hicks said. “It motivates me to do even better at states and for the rest of the season.”
Brayden Winkel ‘27 also placed in the top 10 at the invitational, finishing ninth in slalom.
The boys’ ski team has brought the same intensity and drive to the slopes this season. Despite losing several graduates last year, the team remains focused and motivated as they aim to defend their state championship title.
“We are prepared, excited, and ready for revenge,” Asher Sage ‘27 said.
With returning athletes stepping into leadership roles and new team members contributing energy and effort, the boys are ready to face the challenges of the season head-on. As they continue to train and compete, the team remains committed to achieving its ultimate goal of another state championship alongside the girls’ team.
As the winter season continues, both East Grand Rapids ski teams are positioning themselves as competitive forces, fueled by hard work, experience, and a strong sense of unity on and off the hill.
