A powerhouse of a team at the high school, the Boy’s swim and dive team is just getting started.
Their debut meet was Dec. 12, a Tri meet against multiple opponents.
Each swimmer has their individual goal they’d like to achieve, but when it comes to the whole team, everyone is aiming to beat Cranbrook and win the D-3 State Championship. Last year, EGR fell second to Cranbrook for the state title. This year, they are not going to let that happen. The boys are willing to do what it takes to push for redemption.
Both Carter Kegle ‘24 and Micah Spitzley ‘24 mention how the beginning of the season has been off to a great start.
The boys have a promising season ahead of them. Led by captains Carter Kegle, Micah Spitzley, and Henry VanderMolen, the team is willing to work hard and keep improving.
“It’s been a fun start to the season,” Spitzley said. “We’re all getting to know the freshmen and have the same hope of winning states.”
Spitzley and Gray Flermoen were the 2nd place 200 Medley Relay members last year. Spitzley also finished 6th in the 200-yard IM.
Both Carter and Micah mentioned that to have a good team, you must connect with everyone. The boys are having a great start to the upcoming weeks. They are creating relationships with the underclassmen and reconnecting with old teammates.
Even though swimming is often recognized as an individual sport, the team aspect ultimately leads them to victory.
All of the boys have different individual goals. They each strive for their version of perfection.
“I got first in the 500 free last year and would love to do it again. I got second in the 200 last year, and one of my other goals would be to get first place this year,” Carter Kegle said.
The divers also hope to improve throughout the season: last year, four of the divers placed in the top 20 at states. Kai Chenlo ‘25, Joe Norcutt ‘26, George Janson ‘24, and Rowen Bishop ‘25, all worked hard to earn their placements in the championship. The overall team placement was held significantly, with Janson and Bishop placing 7th and 3rd.
“I want to place in the top five at states,” George Jansen ‘25 said. “I’d also like to PR from last season.”
Junior and sophomore swimmers also look to add points to the board. Charlie Chappus ‘25, Gray Flermoen ‘25, Luke Pouillon ‘25, Lyndon Turnage ‘26, Bishop, and Oliver Chu ‘26 are some of the forces to be reckoned with.
Most importantly, however, they all want to work together and become even more successful.
“I want to drop time in my events and do a good job supporting the team,” Oliver Chu ‘26 said.
The juniors and sophomores hope to bring even more success to the team, pushing to shorten their times and improve their performance.
As the boys all have their own goals, they will still have to work together to reach the state final.
EGR Boys Swim and Dive have a promising upcoming season. With the hard work and team connections in the coming weeks, the rest of the season looks promising.
