Gretchen Whitmer
Gretchen Whitmer, or otherwise known as “Big Gretch”, is Michigan’s 49th governor and has been serving since 2019. Born and raised in Lansing, she has spent her life being a Michigander. She attended Michigan State University’s School of Law, where she began to form her political career.
Before becoming governor of the state, she spent over a decade in Lansing as both a state representative and a state senator. Whitmer is extremely popular in the state because of the way she handled the competitive election during the rise of COVID-19. Her image is relatable and likable to the younger generations in Michigan.
She is a fierce advocate for reproductive rights, clean energy, and workers’ protections. She is a down to earth and humorous candidate, making her likable for all!
Elissa Slotkin
Elissa Slotkin’s story starts on a farm in Holly, Michigan near the suburbs of Detroit. The farm she lived on was home to her family’s long run business, Hygrades Food. Michiganders beloved ball park Frank came from Elissa’s family run business!. So, her list of successes started from a young age.
Elissa studied sociology at Cornell and later attended Colombia to earn a master in international affairs. After completing her years at graduate school, she entered the CIA. There she completed three tours in Iraq as a CIA analyst and led assessment teams. She then worked in both the White House and the Pentagon under both Republican and Democratic administrations. In 2018, she campaigned and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and later became a Michigan Senator.
Growing up in Michigan made her humble and grounded while years in national security work made her fierce, independent, and determined. Her journey, from a small town farm girl to senator is extremely inspiring!
Megan Cavanagh
Megan Cavanagh is a pretty big deal on Michigan’s highest court. She was elected a Justice on Michigan’s supreme court in 2018, and as of April 2025, she is the Chief Justice.
Megan was born and raised in East Lansing. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, go Wolverines! Her engineering major goes to show that Megan can work with both cleaning dirt in the courtroom as well as handling numbers. After studying at the University of Michigan, she went to law school at Wayne State
Before joining the bench, she spent over fifteen years as one of the state of Michigan’s top appellate attorneys in Detroit. A fun fact about Megan, according to ………after winning a seat in 2018, she was then named the first person to ever sit beside their parents as a member of the Michigan Supreme Court since 1857. Her father Mike Cavanagh is an American Justice of the Supreme Court!
Megan is an advocate for child welfare and a loud voice for elder abuse prevention. Chief Justice Cavanagh was rated one of Michigan’s top lawyers in her career! This is just a small representation of how hardworking and determined our Chief Justice is.
