Every day at the beginning of 7th hour on BLANK days, students all over EGRHS look forward to the appearance of the Snack Cart atop the main stairwell. The cart has snacks anywhere from potato chips, popcorn, poptarts, and drinks, something for every student. Loyal customers of the snack carts can thank Zoe Boogaart, Lauren Hecksel, AJ Hafer, and Kennidi Kowal, and Ms. Hutchinson for bringing such a fun tradition to the hallways every week.
“I really like to see people come by and buy stuff from the cart, it’s a lot of fun!” Kennidi Kowal ‘26 said. Even though it may seem like it, the snack cart doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. There is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into the operation. Once a month, Ms. Hutchinson and students take a van to Sam’s club to refill the snacks. Not only does this keep the snack cart flourishing with a wide variety of snacks, but it also teaches the students everyday lessons that everyone should learn.
“They have learned money skills, customer service skills, time management, how to navigate the stores, using a credit card machine, math and adding skills, organization, and retail skills,” Ms. Hutchinson said.
Apart from the technical and real-world skill that come from running the cart, students apart of the class say the relationships that they build are just as important. “My favorite thing about working the snack cart with my classmates is that we all have a close bond.” Zoe Boogaart ‘29.
For the students involved, the snack cart is more than just a business, it’s a place where friendships can grow and confidence builds. Ms. Hutchinson agrees that the members of the class are really what make it special.“My favorite thing about running the snack cart is the people I get to work with. These are my four favorite people on the planet!” she said.
Students who help run the cart also enjoy interacting with the rest of the school. Another student said, “My favorite thing about working the snack cart is seeing all of the people that come to it, especially my friends!” Boogart said. Even just from being in the classroom for five minutes, it’s clear how amazing and dedicated the students behind the snack cart are. The class is filled with an uplifting energy, kindness, and just so much fun. All of EGRHS has these students to thank for providing food, but also a happiness to the hallways.
