6 million dollars. A lot of money, right? Well, that is how much money the EGR Schools Foundation spends during an EGR student’s academic career, K-12.
This year is the first year that more than 2 high school students can be a part of this process. There is a student auxiliary board of the school’s foundation that is made up of 8 juniors, with one overall representative in addition from each upperclassman grade. Tanyon Sanders ‘26 is the senior class representative, and Caleb Rapoport ‘27 is the junior class representative.
“There was an application that was sent to all of the juniors. I filled it out, and they asked about my grades and my extracurriculars, and why I would want to be on the foundation. I had to get a couple of letters of recommendation. They requested to have an interview with me that took about 10 minutes, and about a month later, they sent me an email saying that I was accepted,” junior representative Caleb Rapoport ‘27 said.
The student auxiliary board does a lot of activities that go unrecognized. Have you ever seen one of those big cardboard checks in your teacher’s classroom? The school’s foundation is responsible for those.
“The Big Check Day presentation is where all of the grants that have been requested by teachers and faculty members get approved,” Ivy Chu ‘27, board member, said.
Among presenting the checks, the auxiliary board also deals with the funding to support them.
“We’ve been recording a couple of videos, we’re now making and putting up posters about different grants,” Rapoport said.
As far as getting teachers the funding that they need, this year’s auxiliary board has been hard at work.
“Some of the grants we gave out this year were an iPad Pro to Mr. Wells, funding for the STEM night for Dr. Fox, and a microscope for the science classrooms,” Chu continued.
If you are a current sophomore and are interested in joining the auxiliary board as a member or a representative next year, keep an eye on your email in the spring.
“It’s a very fun opportunity to be involved in, and they support our schools a lot. The application will come out in the spring and will be sent out to all current sophomores,” Rapoport concluded.
